The Department is one of the largest in this field in the UK, and its courses are studied every year by hundreds of undergraduates. We have a reputation for high quality teaching of the subject in the broadest sense: combining a scholarly study of the internal developments in science, technology and medicine over the centuries with the historian's approach to society, politics, institutions and economics. Our courses are wide ranging, covering not just Britain but Europe and the world, from the Renaissance to the 20th century. As of January 1 2008, the Department will be merged with the The Open University's History Department.
