Perspectives on Leonardo da Vinci will introduce you to the life and work of this famous and multi-talented figure. Indeed, so wide ranging were his interests that his work can be used as a starting point for examining a whole range of contemporary fields of knowledge and this course provides a lively and fascinating excursion into the relevance of interdisciplinary approaches to the past.

Given the sheer range of activities in Leonardo’s life and career, it’s no surprise that the course authors’ diverse backgrounds range from science, technology, engineering and mathematics, to art history and history of science, technology and medicine. All the contributions are written from the standpoint of perspectives on the particular thought and practice that Leonardo was engaged in at any historical moment.

Whether the chapters deal, for example, with the historical puzzle of Leonardo’s two versions of his painting The Virgin of the Rocks, or his dazzling but unrealized project for a bridge across the Bosporus, or the evidence his anatomical drawings may provide for experience he had in performing dissections, they all illustrate the character of historical investigation and assessment. The set book, Alessandro Vezzosi’s Leonardo da Vinci: Renaissance Man, reinforces the position that the historical record is incomplete and that a range of possible interpretations is always in view.
