The excitement generated both by literary texts of the twentieth century and the provocative critical debates surrounding them are at the heart of this course. You will be invited to read a range of significant texts with close critical attention. You will then place them in the historical contexts in which they were written and read, examine the debates and arguments of influential critics, and analyse alternative interpretations. There are four blocks: in the first, you will discuss the function of literature; in the second, you will look at different modernisms; in the third, explore notions of popularity, and in the fourth, examine questions of evaluation. Follow the links on the left of this page to find out more
