The Art History department specialises in high quality research and teaching relating to four broad areas of art and architectural history. These include the Renaissance, particularly Italian art and architecture, where a range of individual research projects cover European studies with special emphasis on Italian art and architecture c.1300-1500; art and art theory from the seventeenth through to the twentieth century; recent and contemporary art; a cross-period interest in gender studies; eighteenth and twentieth-century architecture. Our fully-illustrated teaching books (co-published with Yale University Press) have attracted international recognition and many are best sellers. We also run a popular MA in art history.
We have been awarded a grade 5 in the last two Research Assessment exercises (1996, 2001), and continue to expand our research activities. We are particularly proud of our collaborations with museums and galleries, including Tate, the Victoria and Albert Museum and the Milton Keynes Gallery. We are also heavily involved in the new Heritage Studies courses. You can find out more if you explore our website.
