Course tasters

The links below lead to tasters from the first section of the course to help you assess how well you can cope with this sort of language. These include extracts from the first three chapters of Book 1, Reputations, on Cleopatra, Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, and Cézanne. Try not to work through these laboriously – the point is rather for you to test the waters: to check that you understand the language and concepts which are being used. If you encounter problems with the level of this material, follow this link for advice.

Follow this link if you would like to watch a short video introduction to the course.

Sample course material

Extract 1: Cleopatra According to the Romans, from Book 1 Chapter 1, ‘Cleopatra’, by Trevor Fear

Extract 2: The Language of Marlowe’s Doctor Faustus, from Book 1 Chapter 2, ‘Christopher Marlowe, Doctor Faustus’ by Anita Pacheco.

There’s material which is closely adapted from the AA100 Doctor Faustus chapter on the OU’s OpenLearn website. Working through this material in conjunction with the set text would be ideal preparation for Book 1. There’s also useful material on the Radio 3 production of Doctor Faustus, a copy of which you’ll receive as CDs as part of the course material, on the OU-BBC website.

Extract 3: Figures and the picture plane in painting, from Book 1 Chapter 3, ‘Cézanne’, by Charles Harrison.

You might also like to see if there are any Cézanne paintings at a location you could visit. View as PDF; view as an RTF file.

You can also get an idea of how the various elements of the course fit together by viewing the course outline.
