History is the largest department in the Arts faculty, incorporating the Department of the History of Science, Technology and Medicine. Our courses range in scope from medieval to modern times, across Britain to Europe, America and Africa. Our subjects include film and television history, history of medicine and science and the department is currently working on courses in Empires and Heritage. All are underpinned fundamental questions – what is history? How best can we study it? The research interests and methodologies of our staff also range widely, covering social, economic, political and cultural history. Our research strengths are in the history of policing and crime, empire and postcolonial studies, biographical studies and the history of science and medicine.
