The quality of research in the Faculty of Arts is very well recognised and the vibrant research culture within the Faculty supports the work of many internationally-renowned scholars. The Art History department was awarded a grade 5 rating in the 2001 national research assessment exercise while the departments of English, Philosophy, Music, History and History of Science and Technology were awarded grade 4. Classical Studies and Religious Studies both received a 3a.

Collaborative work takes place in a number of research groups and projects which run conferences and seminar series and publish research.

The Ferguson Centre for African and Asian Studies is a Research Centre established by the Faculty of Arts and named in honour of the founding Dean.

The inter-faculty International Centre for Comparative Criminological Research (ICCCR) is one of six recognized University Research Centres.
