After some careful deliberation I decided to study with the Open University, and I am pleased to report that I think I made the right choice. I am a full time single mum and, perhaps in common with many other parents single or otherwise, felt that my responsibilities at home could not marry successfully with attendance at a conventional university.

One of the things that is important to me is that I do the school run myself, and I can do this with the Open University. The children are aware that I am studying – the evidence is all about – but most evenings and all weekends are still ours to enjoy. They know that I work hard and that I enjoy my studies. It is my hope that this approach will encourage them in theirs.

I did have some concerns before I started the course. How would I cope with studying in isolation? Was I up to it academically? How would I manage financially? I believe these worries were logical, well founded and probably very common, but all have been surmounted. A103 An Introduction to the Humanities was definitely the right course for me, I found it fascinating and scored well in the TMAs (Tutor Marked Assignments). The course materials were accessible and of excellent quality, as was the tuition. Tutorials were fairly frequent and very productive – I didn't feel like I was alone.

Because of my circumstances my course fees were waived. Had they not been I would have fallen at the first hurdle and studying for a degree would have been completely beyond me. I have also been granted a student loan and a payment from the Open University Hardship Fund, which has helped make life a little less difficult financially. I would highly recommend study with the Open University. It is a truly inclusive, efficient, supportive and caring institution and I look forward to my remaining years of study.
