Studying the Arts
When you study the Arts and Humanities, you examine aspects of human culture through the books, plays, music, paintings, historical and legal documents, philosophical treatises, maps, buildings and ceremonies that people have created.
You will learn to analyse and interpret the meanings of these various ‘objects’, to make judgments about their value then and now and to communicate your understanding clearly and coherently.
Arts study with the Open University is essentially an academic activity and students are required to produce formal written work on every course. The Open University does not offer practical tuition in the creative arts.
If you have never studied an Arts subject or have not studied
recently or with the Open University before, we recommend that you use the pages
in this section to help you understand more about what is involved and help
you decide what to do next.
