Music Research at the OU – research events 7 January 2009 20 January 2009 – Seminar This presentation aims to contextualise and illustrate the results of research conducted on the musical aspects of the liturgies of zikri rituals. Among the great variety of traditions developed within the frame of the Islamic mysticism, zikri rituals in Harar are notable for the rich repertoire of religious songs performed and for their link with the history of this city. The rituals in Harar are the result of the transformation of doctrinal and ceremonial traits coming from the Arab countries – in a town that has been for centuries an important centre of Islam in the Horn of Africa. The wide repertoire of texts written in Arabic and in the local languages, the sung melodies and their rhythmic accompaniment, the ritual and social function of their performance developed interesting peculiarities in this locale. For centuries, zikri rituals marked Harari life and are still heard during the weekly gatherings in sacred places, during the celebrations of weddings, during the mourning time and in the most important Islamic festivities. 26 January 2009 – Inaugural Lectures 22-24 Apr 2009 – Conference 10-11 July 2009 – Conference 18-22 Sept 2009 [t.b.c.] 20-21 Nov 2009 – Conference
