Diploma of Higher Education in Data Analysis

Data plays an important role in almost all private and public sector employment. The need to understand how to use data to inform business decisions has never been more important. This qualification equips you with the keys skills to explore and analyse complex data sets and solve practical problems using applied mathematics, statistics and computing. It forms a strong foundation for further study or employment in the field of data science.

Key features of the course

  • Develops familiarity with mathematical, statistical and computational data modelling techniques.
  • Builds working knowledge of a range of appropriate software, including writing code in the Python language.
  • Provides experience of carrying out data analysis, and of communicating and critically commenting on the results.
  • Builds a solid foundation on which to continue on to a degree in data science or employment in a wide range of sectors, including finance, government, health, education, the voluntary sector, business and commerce.

Course details

This qualification has two stages, each comprising 120 credits.

  • Stage 1 has with one 30-credit mathematics, one 30-credit statistics and two 30-credit computing & IT modules.
  • In Stage 2, you’ll study one 30-credit applied mathematics module, two 30-credit statistics modules and one 30-credit computing & IT module.

Stage 1 (120 credits)

You’ll study a range of fundamental topics in mathematics, statistics and computing.

Stage 2 (120 credits)

You’ll deepen your understanding of statistics, learn about a variety of mathematical methods, and become a computational thinker.

  • using and/or producing diagrams and/or screenshots
  • undertaking practical work
  • using specialist software, including tools for programming languages

Learning outcomes, teaching and assessment

Credit transfer

If you’ve already completed some study at another university, you may be able to count it towards your Open University qualification – reducing the number of modules you need to study.

You should apply for credit transfer before you register, at least 4 weeks before the registration closing date. Just tell us what you studied, where and when, and we’ll compare this against the learning outcomes for your chosen course.

On completion

On completion of this undergraduate course, we'll award you the Diploma of Higher Education in Data Analysis.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements to study this qualification, but it’s very important you’re well prepared to study mathematics at this level, and are able to read and write to a good standard of English. Ideally, you’ll also have some basic knowledge of computing.

You do need experience in mathematics – you should have a working knowledge of all of the following topics:

  • arithmetic of whole numbers, decimals and fractions (including negative numbers, powers and roots)
  • algebraic manipulation, such as multiplying out brackets, factorising simple expressions, solving linear and quadratic equations, manipulating algebraic fractions and manipulating powers of variables
  • percentages, ratio and proportion
  • simple inequalities
  • exponential functions, logarithms and the rules for manipulating them.

How much time do I need?

  • Most of our students study part time, completing 60 credits a year.
  • This will usually mean studying for 16–18 hours a week.

Counting previous study

You could save time and money by reducing the number of modules you need to study towards this qualification if you have:

  • already studied at university level (even if you didn't finish your studies)
  • other professional or vocational qualifications such as HNCs and HNDs.
