Accessibility Statement for Environmental science (S206)
Mode of study
All of this module’s study materials are online. Online materials are composed of pages of text with images, audio/video clips of <1–30 minutes long (all with transcripts/subtitles), diagrams, interactive media, animations and multiple-choice self-assessed quizzes. Online materials also include links to external resources, online forums and online tutorial rooms. Printable alternatives are provided for most module content.
This module provides a range of learning events: online tutorials, a live online field cast, optional tutor-led day field trips and longer four-day field schools. Although not compulsory, attendance at tutorials will help you consolidate your learning.
Working with others
You will be required to work with other students in your tutor group to discuss your findings from some of the activities. This work is not assessed.
Field-based practical work is an optional component. This includes some collaborative group work. Environmental science (S206) introduces you to the use of an online OpenScience laboratory for some of the practical activities. These activities are accessible, though alternative study materials have been prepared to enable students with visual impairments or limited manual dexterity to successfully study the module.
S206 students are assessed on their study of an online virtual field trip and completion of a project. As an alternative, students may attend two optional residential field schools and complete the assessment relevant to these schools.
Mathematical and scientific expressions and notations
Mathematical and scientific symbols and expressions are used throughout the module and you will be required to use such notation within assessment.
Diagrams and other visual content
The study materials contain a considerable number of diagrams, graphs and photographs. Reading, interpreting and producing examples of these is an important part of the study of this module and is assessed. Figure descriptions are provided for all figures.
You will be required to search for, and make use of, third party material online and this is assessed. Alternatives for required/assessed research material can be provided to enable you to meet the learning outcomes of the module. E.g. some activities in S206 use Google Earth to allow students to investigate real-life examples of landforms, both under the ocean and on land. Whilst relevant images can be supplied, it is necessary for students to use them to take measurements in order to answer some of the questions in the module assessment.
This module has Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs), which must be submitted online via the OU electronic TMA system. The TMAs assess the module text and occasionally the activities incorporated within the module. The final TMA assesses the study of an online virtual field trip and a project.
You will receive feedback from your tutor on your submitted Tutor-Marked Assignments (TMAs). This will help you to reflect on your TMA performance. You should refer to it to help you prepare for your next assignment.
