Success stories

While success means something different to everyone, our alumni are unanimous: studying with The Open University has enabled them to achieve their goals and succeed in ways that are personally meaningful for them.

The success stories of our graduates take many forms. What all success stories have in common is a shared appreciation for the methods and ethos of The Open University.

Many of our graduates praise the flexibility and portability of Open University study. Consider the example of Catherine Hennessy:

I was in Tanzania, Ghana and Madagascar while I was completing my degree, but all the time I could keep in touch with my tutors, I could attend tutorials... It was just perfect for me... The staff, the whole system is wonderful. I feel very happy.

Catherine Hennessy, BSc (Honours) International Studies

There are countless stories like Catherine’s, including Lauren Frater who studied for her Open University qualification across Jamaica, London and Tokyo, and Anushree Prashant, a self-confessed ‘global nomad’ who started her Open University studies in The Netherlands and completed them in Lagos, Nigeria.

Other graduates measure success by the fact that an Open University qualification has empowered them to change or improve their careers:

It was singly the most important decision I’ve ever taken in terms of my career mobility.

Frank Froud, MBA

Others consider an Open University education a success because it has helped them to change their lives:

I just want to say thank you… I feel that The Open University have given me an opportunity I would never have otherwise had, and has enabled me to feel that I’ve got a career, a future, given me self-respect, given me self-confidence - it’s just changed everything. It’s the beginning of something new... It’s the beginning of the rest of my life.

Claire Trease, Engineering graduate

Consider the words of Joanna Patrick, BA (Honours) Humanities, First Class Degree with Distinction:

Studying with The Open University did change my life. It gave me the confidence, not only to progress in my professional life but also to pursue personal goals. I no longer take anything at surface value and the biggest legacy that The Open University has given me is to always have an inquiring mind and remain open to new ideas.

Joanna Patrick, BA (Hons) Humanities

Sometimes, an Open University education enables our graduates to change the lives of others:

It helped me to make other people’s lives better… I developed many people to the next stage as a manager. This only happened because of what I learned at The Open University.

Rakesh Kumar, MBA

For others still, studying with The Open University is their way of changing not just themselves, or others, but changing the world.
