Learning materials

The books and the DVDs and things that students receive… are the tip of the iceberg. That's just a small amount. What's behind that is the infrastructure and the whole resources of The Open University in the support of the students.

Professor Hazel Rymer

Our teaching materials, developed by leading academics and industry experts, are considered world-class.

Three quarters of traditional universities in the UK use our learning materials, demonstrating that we’re not just as good as traditional universities – in many cases we’re deemed to be better!

The OU… is very well organised and structured, and the information in the handbooks was always very clear. The key thing for me is the materials you’re given are so good that you can teach yourself with tutors adding a bit on the top. This is why I have recommended the OU and will continue to do so.

Greg Bensberg MBE, MBA graduate

We’re committed to giving learners what they need, and we continually adapt and evolve our courses to suit new types of learning and changes in technology. This commitment to continual investment is one of our greatest strengths.

Probably the unique selling point is the actual material itself. The teaching that you get from the materials is actually the biggest supportive mechanism that there is.

Billy Khokhar, Assistant Director, Yorkshire Region, The Open University

An example of our successful investment in materials is our MBA case builder app.

We recently developed this mobile-optimised tool through consultation with a range of academics from the business school, as well as our own alumni. The app generates a personalised, compelling business case for employees to submit to their employers, with a view to securing employer sponsorship for an Open University MBA.

Our app is so good, it’s a gold award winner.
